Capt. Tyler Bowman: SC Lowcountry Fly Fishing Guide

Beaufort, Hilton Head, Fripp Island, and Edisto, SC fly fishing guide for redfish, tarpon, cobia, jack crevalle, tripletail, and albies year-round.

Tyler Bowman is a Lowcountry native who began fishing the area on his own at the ripe age of ten years old. The beautiful ACE Basin has been Tyler's backyard playground for as long as he can remember. Growing up exploring the creeks and flats around his home made guiding came naturally to him. Tyler’s life long relationship with the marsh has created an unbreakable bond with the Lowcountry that he loves to share with others.  Helping anglers catch trophy fish on the fly rod is a rewarding feeling that fuels Tyler's passion. His goal is to keep his clients safe and comfortable while showing them an authentic Lowcountry experience.

Tyler is a conservationist who enjoys pushing environmental concerns and documenting the beauty of the place he calls home. He has collaborated with companies such as Winston Rods, Bauer Reels, Bajio Sunglasses, Cortland Lines, and others to showcase the Lowcountry and raise awareness for the issues the area faces.

Q&A With Capt. Tyler Bowman

Describe your fly fishing style.
I’m a dedicated vessel that guides you to the fish, committed to helping anglers of all skill levels master their abilities. Let’s fish hard and make every outing a productive adventure!

Why did you decide to become a guide?
The Lowcountry is an integral part of me, both physically and mentally. Guiding chose me, and I believe I possess an intuitive understanding that allows me to provide my clients with experiences truly worth their time and investment.

What is your most memorable catch?
While fishing in Ascension Bay, Mexico, with the Winston Rods crew, we were on a mission to catch a tarpon for a crucial shoot. Our guide shouted my nickname, “Agujan,” and I took my position on the bow of the panga. With a long cast into the wind, we hooked that tarpon just in time, all in one of the most stunning spots I’ve ever experienced.

What is your most memorable client catch?
While poling a flat during a flood tide, we spotted a large sheepshead tailing. We carefully got off the skiff and threw one of my favorite permit flies, but it broke when I set the hook. Undeterred, we tied on the same fly again and successfully caught the fish on our second attempt.

Do you enjoy fishing as much as you enjoy guiding?
If you do not, you are not a fishing guide. On my days off, I fish with my buddies and family.

Who got you into fishing?
My family comes from a long line of avid outdoorsmen. I grew up fishing with my dad for bass in our farm pond and on the beach flats when I could barely walk.

What is your favorite fish in the world to fish for?
Redfish bring more smiles to an array of anglers than any other fish out there. I love my  golden amigos.

What is your dream fishing location?
Mexico Permit have to be one of the most fun fish to catch on the fly destination wise.

Music or no music on the boat?
We definitely will vibe, but its just like cracking a beer. We gotta be celebrating something.

What is your opinion of bananas?
I love bananas, bring twenty.

What can everyone do to help the environment of the SC Lowcountry?
Practice catch and release, pick up the little things you see in the marsh, and report others who disrespect the resource. There are also organizations such as Charleston Water Keeper who help fight for our water clarity and educate the public. Bonefish And Tarpon trust has steadily been working along the east coast as well on the research and understanding of our evolving Tarpon fishery.
